NotesWilliam Bestermann, Sr., had at least one sister, named Augusta Bestermann.She married a man by the last name of Fritz, and had at least one daughter, Minnie Fritz. This information was extrapolated from photographs in Carol Federman's album. Verification is still needed. According to information obtained from Cemetery records and Death Certificates, the following scenario is likely for William's parentage: William Besterman's father was Frank Bestermann, who died on October 21, 1875 at the age of 48 years, 1 month, and 25 days. This would indicate a birth date of August 27, 1827 and make Frank 20 years old at the time of William's birth. (Death Cert. # K-10226) It should be noted that William Bestermann was living in the same house as Frank Besterman. The address for William, indicated on his son's birth certificate was 147 21 St. (Oct. 1875), the same as that listed on Frank's death certificate (same month). Frank Bestermann was married to Gertrude Kloppenberg (Elizabeth Grefe's death certificate gives parent's names as Frank Bestermann and Gertrude Kloppenburg) and had a daughter Elizabeth (who married Grefe). Elizabeth died August 13, 1928. (Death Cert. # K-16749). If the parental relation is valid, she would be William's second sister. William Bestermann paid for the burial of a Genevieve Kloppenburg in 1873 (evidenced by casket receipt). Genevieve would apparently be the mother of Gertrude, making her William's maternal grandmother. She died on June 20, 1873 at the age of 82 years, 5 months, and 17 days (Death Cert. # K-4651). All of the above person's are buried in either the same grave, or related graves, indicating blood relation. No definate proof of relation between Frank Bestermann and William has yet been found. ******** William was a member of the New York National Guard from November 17, 1874 until October 18, 1880. Death Cert. gives age as 34 years, 6 mos., and 10 days, differing from date of birth given by descendants and obituary, which was 17 NOV 1847. Originally interred in Sec. W, Range K, Lot 158. Transferred to Vernon Section when son Frederick was buried one week later. Cemetery failed to note change on Vernon card, but had it on old plot.
